Dundee to maintain charge

Gareth Friel is backing Dundee to beat St Mirren in the SPL this weekend while he feels Celtic could be shocked by Inverness.

Just a few weeks ago you would have been given pretty long odds on Dundee moving off the bottom of the SPL any time soon. But by five o'clock on Saturday evening that could well have happened.

The Dark Blues had been on a run of nine defeats in 10 heading into their match with Hearts three weeks ago but since then have taken seven points from nine to close the gap on second bottom St Mirren, a team on a six-match losing run.

The sides go head-to-head in Paisley on Saturday and a win for Dundee would take them above their opponents - that would be quite an achievement by Barry Smith and his men.

This losing spell for Saints is a big test for boss Danny Lennon. He has impressed since taking charge of the Buddies but with relative success comes higher expectations and boos rang around New St Mirren Park after the home thumping by Aberdeen two weeks ago.

St Mirren are really low on confidence and are missing the creativity of Paul McGowan. I'm a big admirer of what Lennon has done with the club but his team must be there for the taking.

In contrast, Dundee will be buzzing for this one and if they can get in front the three points could be theirs.

They seems a big price on the Dark Blues considering the evidence above.

Celtic will be looking to bounce back from their Champions League defeat in Benfica against Inverness at Parkhead.

But the champions have won two out of four following Champions League group games so it may be worth getting the Highlanders onside.

As well as suffering from European hangovers, Celtic have been far from convincing on home soil, winning just three of six in the SPL.

Terry Butcher's side have lost only once away and they look good value in the 'draw no bet' market.
