Blades to surprise Hammers
Nick Hext and Ben Coley preview Tuesday's Capital One Cup ties with Sheffield United and Southampton among their fancies.
Sheffield United are the tip to spring a surprise in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup action. The Blades travel south to take on West Ham and I like the look of the 5/1 available for the Sky Bet League 1 side to win in 90 minutes. Nigel Clough’s men have won back-to-to back games to raise spirits and showed their cup pedigree last season in the FA Cup. They reached the semi-finals with victory over Premier League opposition Aston Villa and Fulham on the way. West Ham will rest players as the norm for Premier League sides and Sam Allardyce’s men will have to watch out. (NH)
Contrasting fortunes at the weekend for these two as Preston managed to win without impressing their manager whereas some woeful Boro defending gave them too much to do against Sheffield Wednesday. Aitor Karanka was furious with his side but they did rally to eventually lose 3-2, and I fancy them to return to the form which saw them beat Birmingham, Oldham and Bolton. Preston's away form looks good but they were no match for Burnley's reserves at this stage last year and the Championship outfit should bounce back in a competition which produces fond memories for the fans. There was plenty of doom and gloom around Southampton at the start of the season - at least from the point of view of an outsider looking in - but they've started the Premier League campaign solidly with an unfortunate defeat at Anfield before Saturday's 0-0 draw with West Brom. Ronald Koeman is set to name a strong side for this trip to Millwall and while the Lions won't roll over, Saints should be too strong. Millwall have enjoyed a very gentle introduction to the new Championship season but suffered defeat for the first time since March on Saturday, and Ian Holloway is expected to make wholesale changes for a game which means more to Southampton.
