The Three Lions headed into the clash as odds-on favourites to progress from Group D amid a surge of patriotic support but are now 5/1 from 10/11 to make the knockout stages, with Costa Rica and Uruguay both favoured at 8/11 and 5/4 respectively.

Italy are 1/12 favourites to make it out of Group D.

If Costa Rica and Italy draw on Friday afternoon, or the Central Americans beat Cesare Prandelli's team, England will be eliminated with one match to spare.

If Italy won both their remaining games, Uruguay, Costa Rica and England will be tied for second spot, provided that Roy Hodgson's men win their final match.

Paul Wiggins, Sky Bet’s Head of Football, said: "We’ve not totally given up on England’s chance of qualifying as they will be odds-on to beat Costa Rica while Italy will be favourites for both of their remaining games.

"However, it would be no surprise to see Italy drift in the betting against Uruguay if they have already wrapped up qualification."

Suarez is now a 16/1 shot in Sky Bet's top goalscorer market.
