Sky Bet make the Argentine a 5/4 chance to succeed Sherwood, whose reign at White Hart Lane lasted less than five months.

Pochettino leads the market ahead of current Ajax manager Frank de Boer, who has suggested he would be interested in a move to the north London club.

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, now at Napoli, is next at 5/1 with David Moyes, out of work since leaving Manchester United last month, at 9/1.

Moyes is a former favourite for the Spurs post. He was heavily linked with them before they appointed Andre Villas-Boas, who eventually lost his job in December when Sherwood was appointed on what was initially announced as an 18-month deal.

However, in announcing Sherwood's departure on Tuesday, chairman Daniel Levy revealed there was an early-exit clause which the club has now exercised.

Sky Bet's head of football trading Paul Wiggins said: "It was almost inevitable that Sherwood would leave, so much so that we already had a market open on the potential vacancy.

"De Boer was the initial favourite but Pochettino has been gaining support over the past few days as it looks likely that he'll lose his key players at Southampton.

"We don't foresee Sherwood being out of work for long, with the 45-year-old currently odds-on to be the next Brighton manager and 5/1 to replace Pepe Mel at West Brom."

Pochettino has just guided Southampton to an impressive eighth-placed finish in the Premier League but their success this season has led to bigger clubs sniffing around many of their star players such as Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana.

Meanwhile, former Dutch international De Boer has been celebrating title success with Ajax in the Netherlands.
