Steven Caulker returned to haunt his former club as his powerful header gave Cardiff a 1-0 win over Swansea in the Barclays Premier League's first south Wales derby.
The game failed to live up to the hyped build-up, with few chances at either end at Cardiff City Stadium.
Michu missed Swansea's best opportunity in just the fifth minute, but it was Cardiff who emergedwinners as Caulker, who spent a season on loan at Swansea, rose to score the winner.
Swansea, who had goalkeeper Michel Vorm sent off in stoppage time, had started the game strongly, but Michael Laudrup's side gradually faded as Cardiff came on strong in the second half.
Earlier in the day, Everton and Tottenham both missed the chance to move up to second as they played out a goalless draw at Goodison Park.
Spurs failed to make the most of considerable possession and a number of chances in the first half while Everton dominated after the break.
Both sides thought they had strong penalty claims after Jan Vertonghen and Seamus Coleman tangled with each other on separate occasions in each half but nothing was given.
Home goalkeeper Tim Howard and opposite number Hugo Lloris - who played on after a blow to the head in the second half - both had busy afternoons but held firm.
