Victories for both Manchester sides along with straightforward successes for both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich meant the layers had a torrid time of it, one which would've been even worse had Juventus found a way past Copenhagen.
"Six of the seven best-backed sides winning meant it was a disastrous first night for us," said Sky Bet's Joe Petyt.
"With the exception of Juve, all of the short-priced favourites went in and we've got some big liabilities rolling over to Wednesday, where we'll want the likes of Barcelona, AC Milan and Schalke to slip up."
Sky Bet cut Real to 5/1 in their outright betting after Cristiano Ronaldo inspired them to a 6-1 win in Turkey, but Bayern remain favourites at 7/2 following a 3-0 stroll against CSKA Moscow.
City's victory in Plzen saw them cut to 12/1, which puts them ahead of 14/1 chances United in the betting, but Chelsea remain the strongest Premier League side according to the betting at 9/1.
"Tougher tests await both Manchester sides, particularly City who might have to improve again to keep Bayern off top spot in Group D," added Petyt.
