Wayne Rooney scored a ninth-minute winner to send Manchester United through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over a spirited West Ham at Old Trafford.
The England striker side-footed into an empty net after Javier Hernandez had got in behind the visitors' defence and squared.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side will now face Fulham at home in the next round.
However, they were far from at their best and looked impotent for long periods in the absence of top-scorer Robin van Persie.
Rooney started the game well and deserved his goal, but his influence waned and he went on to miss a second-half penalty.
West Ham once again put up a brave fight and missed several good chances of their own to force extra time, with Matt Taylor and Kevin Nolan both guilty.

Meanwhile Jack Wilshere fired Arsenal into the fourth round as his a superb late strike gave them a 1-0 victory over Swansea at the Emirates Stadium.
The England midfielder - out for more than a year with ankle and knee injuries before returning to action this season - capped a man-of-the-match display to finally beat inspired Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm with a 20-yard strike on 86 minutes to set up a trip to Brighton and keep alive hopes of Arsenal's first trophy since 2005.
The Gunners were much improved from the lacklustre 2-0 Barclays Premier League defeat toManchester City on Sunday and, but for a combination of poor finishing and brilliant defending, would have had this third-round replay wrapped up well before Wilshere's fine late effort.
