Betting had been suspended as positive talks were expected to lead to his appointment, but former favourite Tim Sherwood has now been reinstated as the 6/4 frontrunner.
Mackay is still available to back at 6/1, while former Tottenham managers Martin Jol and Glenn Hoddle are also outside contenders at 7/2 and 14/1 respectively.
Sky Bet’s Dale Tempest said: “Sherwood has to be in the driving seat now but we’re seeing plenty of money on Steve Clark, who is now second favourite at 4/1.
“We were as short as 1/8 on Sherwood earlier this week, so those punters who put faith in him may still receive a pay-out.”
