France international Schneiderlin has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere at the end of a summer dominated by high-profile departures at St Mary’s.
After returning from the World Cup finals, the talented midfielder has seen the likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren offloaded.
It has been suggested that he too is pushing for a switch before the window closes, but Southampton are reluctant to do business.
Club captain Fonte has welcomed that stance, with Schneiderlin drafted back into the side for Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Southampton.
He said of a man who is said to be interesting former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur: “It means everything. We all know how important he is.
“He’s a great player and he showed again why there is interest in him. I’m just thankful that he played for us.
“He’s always been a very good professional. He’s always been on top of his game and he does what he has to do.
“He has a contract with us and he has been very professional.”
Southampton remain under threat, though, with rival clubs having until September 1 to complete their transfer business.
Fonte is hoping to see that deadline pass with Schneiderlin still on the south coast, with it vital that key men are retained if the club are to consolidate their Premier League standing.
He added: “It would be massive.
“He’s one of the most important players for us, so we’re just played that he’s still with us.”
