The 19-year-old winger impressed last season with Liverpool and won his first England squad, before a dip in form saw him struggling to get into the Liverpool side.

But this term has seen Sterling's best form yet, and he admits that is down to Rodgers.

"It's great to have a manager that has belief in you. For a young player, that's all you cry out for. I'm grateful he has so much belief in me," Sterling told The Sun.

"Obviously it is disappointing when you sit on the bench for two games but I knew I just had to be ready, as I couldn't be on flat heels if I got called up again.

"It was just great the manager had the confidence and belief to put me in for such a big game. I'm delighted we got the win to go with it.

"Working with players like Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, it is a real credit to them that I am learning bits off them and trying to put it into my own game on a match day.

"I think my work rate has improved and I also now have the confidence to go and play, as I have players like Luis and Stevie giving me encouragement. It's a credit to them."

Sterling insists that despite talk of a World Cup place, he is not getting carried away.

"High end players like Stevie [Gerrrard] will always make sure your feet are firmly on the floor. But I'm not that type of person, so I don't think that would be a problem really," he said.

"There will never be a problem with my feet coming off the floor. I try to switch off after every game, to watch my performances two days after."
