The 28-year-old has been charged following a clash with Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

The altercation occurred after Boyd went down in the penalty area, as he was challenged by Hart, who reacted angrily.

Scotland international Boyd is alleged to have spat in Hart's direction during the confrontation and a three-man FA panel decided to charge him after reviewing video evidence.

An FA statement on Tuesday read: "The charge is in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E1 [a] in that in or around the 68th minute of the game, Boyd spat at Manchester City's Joe Hart. The incident was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"Under a new pilot project in Premier League matches this season, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel of former elite referees will be asked by the FA to review it and advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.

"For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence.

"In this instance, the panel were of the unanimous decision that it was an act of misconduct."

However, the Tigers have confirmed that Boyd will challenge the charge.

Hull boss Steve Bruce said after the match: "He (Boyd) has tried to talk and shout and something's come out. That's what I've seen of it.

"George Boyd wouldn't do that, no chance. Not deliberately, anyway. He is as honest as they come - he was playing non-league six years ago."

Hart was booked by referee Lee Mason for his part in the incident and as a result he will face no further action.
