Julian Speroni is ready to scrap for the Crystal Palace number one spot and earn himself a contract extension.

The long-serving Argentine goalkeeper has been at Selhurst Park since 2004 and has been a virtual ever-present since 2007/08.

He has, however, seen his position as undisputed first-choice shot-stopper come under threat.

Palace moved to snap up Wales international Wayne Hennessey from Wolves on transfer deadline day in a deal which could end up costing them as much as £3million.

Hennessey has been snapped up with one eye on the future, but will be hoping to be involved regularly from the off.

Speroni will, however, be doing all he can to keep his competition on the sidelines and convince boss Tony Pulis that he is deserving of fresh terms - with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

He said: "During my time here I am used to different managers arriving and other goalkeepers coming in.

"I've always seen that as a challenge and I've always kept my place in the side. This is no different.

"I'm happy with my form this season. I have felt fitter and better than ever.

"I have a good few years left and hopefully everything will be tied up soon."
