Ajax dropped points in the Eredivisie for the first time in three months as they were held 1-1 by FC Utrecht.
Daley Blind opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a long-range effort, but less than 10 minutes later Steve De Ridder raced clear to slot home an equaliser for Utrecht, with Ajax appeals for a foul in the build-up waved away.
The result means Ajax failed to put any real distance between themselves and Vitesse Arnhem, two points back after their 1-1 draw with Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Saturday.
FC Twente moved up to third, four points from the summit, with a 3-1 victory over FC Cambuur, but only after trailing at half-time.
Ramon Leeuwin put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Rasmus Bengtsson fouled Bartholomew Ogbeche.
But Twente hit back after the break, with Luc Castaignos levelling before substitute Shadrach Eghan put them ahead on the hour mark, just seconds after entering the fray.
Bengtsson then had the final word in the 79th minute.
PSV Eindhoven lost further ground on the battle at the top as they lost 2-0 at RKC Waalwijk, where Evander Sno scored a second-half brace.
Sno scored in the 54th and final minutes of a match which left PSV languishing in seventh, 15 points from the summit.
Towards the other end of the table, struggling NEC Nijmegen were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Go Ahead Eagles.
Michael Higdon put NEC ahead after just five minutes, but Deniz Turuc levelled before the hour mark.
On Saturday, Alfred Finnbogason continued his prolific form this season with a second-half penalty as Heerenveen closed on fourth-placed Feyenoord with a 3-0 home win over ADO Den Haag.
Kenny Otigba broke the deadlock in the 58th minute and then Iceland international Finnbogason made it 2-0 from the spot with his 20th Eredivisie goal of the season, leaving him clear at the top of the scoring charts.
Substitute Rajiv van la Parra then added a third goal late on to seal the victory as Heerenveen moved to within four points of Feyenoord.
Two goals in the opening 17 minutes from Nemanja Gudelj earned AZ Alkmaar a 2-0 home win over FC Groningen and sixth spot in the table, while PEC Zwolle remain two points further back after beating Roda JC 3-1.
Zwolle saw Ryan Thomas's 19th-minute opener cancelled out by Mitchell Donald just after the hour, but the home side were not to be denied and two goals in the final 13 minutes from Guyon Fernandez (penalty) and Fred Benson sealed the triumph.
Saturday's other match saw NAC Breda win 2-1 at mid-table rivals Heracles, Jordy Buijs (38) and Rydell Poepon (61) putting the visitors in charge before Bryan Linssen (71) pulled a goal back for the hosts.
On Friday night, Vitesse's hopes of returning to the top were dashed by a 1-1 draw at Feyenoord.
The Rotterdam club led after 39 minutes through Graziano Pelle but Vitesse pulled level with a goal from Guram Kashia 12 minutes into the second half.
It was the second successive draw for the Arnhem-based team and they sit one point behind leaders Ajax, who travel to Utrecht on Sunday.
Feyenoord remain just outside of the top three, five points from the top of the standings.
