Heerenveen missed the chance to reach fourth place in the Eredivisie table after struggling to force a 1-1 draw at ADO Den Haag.
Before kick-off on Wednesday night, Feyenoord, Groningen and AZ Alkmaar were all only two points better off than Marco van Basten's side, who were lucky to even move above PEC Zwolle with the point earned by Kenny Otigba on the stroke of full-time.
ADO have their own problems and were looking to climb out of the bottom three with victory. They had it within their sights for 20 minutes after Mike van Duinen made the breakthrough midway through the second half.
They remain 16th, one point shy of both Heracles and Cambuur Leeuwarden.
It was a similar story for the Almelo club, who saw two points slip away from them in the last minute of a 1-1 draw at Go Ahead Eagles.
Mark Uth scored in the 75th minute but the Eagles, who did not want to be sucked into 14th place by their opponents, grabbed an equaliser through Erik Falkenburg at De Adelaarshorst.
