The Cherries were also winners, recovering after conceding an early goal to defeat Notts County 3-1 on the south coast.

Jeff Hughes headed County in front after just two minutes, but Matt Ritchie headed in Charlie Daniels' cross quarter of an hour later and Bournemouth were in front when Brett Pitman fired in from the edge of the area 10 minutes after that.

County's Andre Boucaud was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a second bookable offence and Ritchie wrapped up the win with his second five minutes from time.

Yeovil climbed to third with a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury, with James Hayter scoring the first from the spot after Marvin Morgan's handball and then setting up Paddy Madden for the second after Stephen McGinn's equaliser.

That lifted them above Brentford who were held 1-1 at Coventry, with Harry Forrester cancelling out Carl Baker's penalty early in the second half.

Sheffield United were also held to a 1-1 draw away in the West Midlands, taking a point at Walsall.

Craig Westcarr spun and shot to give Walsall a lead on the stroke of half-time, but Chris Porter touched home in the 65th minute after Jamie Murphy's shot struck one post then rolled across the goal to hit the other.

At the other end of the table Hartlepool gave themselves hope, moving off the foot and to within five points of safety with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Bury, who now sink to the bottom.

Andy Monkhouse headed in in either half, while Bury had Craig Fagan sent off for a foul on Darren Holden just before half-time.

Portsmouth did little to improve their situation in a 0-0 draw with Stevenage, but the clubs immediately above them suffered defeats.

Scunthorpe went down 3-0 at Preston, with an outstanding long-range strike from Nicky Wroe the highlight at Deepdale, while Oldham are above the drop zone on goal difference alone after losing 2-1 at home to Carlisle, who took control with first-half goals from Liam Noble and Jordan Mustoe.

Colchester moved away from trouble with a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient, who had Kevin Lisbie miss a late penalty, while MK Dons and Crawley drew 0-0.
