Daniel Caligiuri was the hero as Freiburg hit back from two goals down to seal a place in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal courtesy of a 3-2 triumph at 10-man Mainz.

It appeared the hosts were well on course for victory when they went 2-0 ahead before the fifth minute thanks to goals from Shawn Parker and Niki Zimling.

However, Mainz had Zdenek Pospech sent off in the 65th minute, while substitute Ivan Santini narrowed the deficit in the 86th minute and the game was sent to extra time following a last-gasp penalty by Caligiuri, who then sealed victory for the visitors in the 108th minute.

Wolfsburg's passage to the last four was a little more straightforward, although they had to hold off a determined third-division Kickers Offenbach to win 2-1.

Ivica Olic and Bas Dost put the Bundesliga side two goals to the good in the 49th and 71st minutes respectively.

Marcel Stadel set up a tense finale with his strike nine minutes from time but Wolfsburg held on to progress.
