Grayson was relieved of his duties with the Terriers after a 12-game winless run in the league which has seen them slump to 18th in the Championship, seven points above the drop zone.
The nearest challenger to Adkins, who was sacked by the Saints last week despite leading them back to the Premier League with successive promotions, in the Town boss betting is ex-Bolton supremo Owen Coyle at 10/1.
Other names in the early frame are former England defender Gareth Southgate (18/1), who is currently Head of Elite Development at the Football Association, ex-Derby and Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies (22/1) and Bradford manager Phil Parkinson (22/1).
Sky Bet football trader Jamie Munro said: "Adkins left Southampton with his stock high and will be a tempting proposition for any club searching for a new manager and that is reflected in the early price of 1/2.
"Among a host of other candidates is Sky Bet's very own Dale Tempest and you can get 200/1 on the former Hong Kong international and Town striker to get the job."
