MacDonald has been installed as the front runner to move to Ewood Park at 1/4 with Sky Bet after Berg was sacked after just 10 games in charge on Thursday morning.
Berg, who signed a three-year contract on October 31, managed to steer the club to just one victory in his 57 days at the helm and the 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day saw them slip to 17th in the Championship table.
Mark Hughes - the former Rovers boss has drifted to 4/1, while Tim Sherwood can be backed at 12/1 for this post.
Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: "Hughes was the man people initially went for and would appear to be the fans' choice.
"However, we have since seen a series of hefty bets on MacDonald. He was linked with the club last week and perhaps punters are putting two and two together."
