Champions Manchester City had to come from behind to earn a 3-2 win over newly-promoted Southampton in an exhilarating season-opener at the Etihad Stadium.

Carlos Tevez celebrates his goal for Man City.

City had gone into the break 1-0 up courtesy of Carlos Tevez's opener just before the interval, although slightly fortunate given he appeared offside.

Nigel Adkins' men fought back and two goals from two substitutes gave them a surprise 2-1 lead as Rickie Lambert levelled matters before Steve Davis put the gallant Saints ahead.

However, the visitors could not hang on as Edin Dzeko swept home the equaliser before Samir Nasri fired home the winner with 10 minutes left.

Though City took the three points the win was marred by striker Sergio Aguero being stretched away from the action early in the game.

In Sunday's other game, Premier League debutant Eden Hazard played a starring role as Chelsea began their season with a 2-0 victory over Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Both goals came in the first seven minutes, with Hazard setting up full-back Branislav Ivanovic for the opener and then winning a penalty that was converted by Frank Lampard.

Wigan dominated possession for much of the rest of the game and pressed hard for a goal, with Chelsea target Victor Moses, former Blue Franco Di Santo and new striker Arouna Kone all forcing decent saves from Petr Cech, but they could not make the breakthrough.
