Hughton signed the Dutch striker for a reported £8.5million from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon and the Carrow Road manager hopes that the he will help Norwich improve on last seasons eleventh place finish in the Premier League.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Hughton said: "In this division you have to make sure you are hard to beat but you also have to have players who can make the difference.
"I can't think of one game last season where we thought this one is going to be comfortable for us.
"This signing could be the one that turns some of our draws into wins. We drew a lot last season and that is one area where we would like to see the difference."
Hughton also thinks that Van Wolfswinkel is capable of making a similar impact to other players in the Premier League who have impressed during their debut season.
Hughton added: "We hope he's the man. The test is can he do it in a very tough division. We've seen scorers at Aston Villa like Benteke when he arrived, and Grant Holt got 15 goals for us in the season before last."
