McAuley happy to wait

West Brom defender Gareth McAuley insists he is unconcerned by his contract situation as he enters the final year of his current deal.

Gareth McAuley: Not thinking about contract

The Northern Ireland international's contract expires at the end of the current campaign, although the Premier League side have the option of a one-year extension.

McAuley has established himself as a first-team regular at the heart of the Albion defence and even got on the scoresheet in the win over Everton.

As a result, the man signed from Ipswich last summer is determined to just focus on his game and trust that the new deal will come.

"I've got one more year and the club have an option," McAuley told the Express and Star.

"But I'm not thinking about that now, I'm just enjoying playing football and taking every day as it comes."

The 32-year-old has had to wait for his chance in the top flight and has proven something of a late developer as he did not make the step up from part-time football in Northern Ireland until 24.

"Maybe I wasn't ready when I was younger," added McAuley.

"I came into football late. I was thankful to get the start in the league I was in but I was always pushing myself and trying to get as high as I could.

"When I was in the Championship, I always thought I would get to this level through promotion."
