Jason Roberts does not anticipate any problems as he tries to sort out a new contract with Reading and is staying focused on performing as well as he can during the upcoming season.

Jason Roberts: Keeping his cool

The 34-year-old striker joined the Royals in January on an 18-month contract and played a key role in helping Brian McDermott's side achieve promotion.

He would now like to resolve his long-term future but insists it is not a major concern as he is concentrating on the task ahead in the Premier League.

"It's a relaxed conversation and I can't see it being an issue," Roberts said in the Reading Post.

"It will get sorted in time and it won't be a problem. Since I came to this club I think I have shown what I am about and will continue to do that.

"All I can do now is focus on the football and focus on the opportunity we have given ourselves by performing so well last year."

Roberts has also assured supporters not to worry about Reading's poor form in pre-season and says the players are building up nicely for the new campaign.

He said: "There's definitely been a change of atmosphere since we got back from Portugal.

"You get back to your environment and start to focus on what is coming up. Pre-season suits some teams and doesn't suit others.

"I don't think it suits us as a squad as we're a 100-per-cent team and don't work as well when you take that 10 per cent off.

"Other teams can manage that better. The way we play and the characters we have, it doesn't suit us when we're not performing at 100-per-cent intensity.

"But you have to do that in pre-season and get your pattern of play right. There has been a step up in training now and we can feel the season is upon us."
