Stoke goalkeeper Carlo Nash will continue at the Britannia Stadium this season after agreeing a new one-year deal.

Carlo Nash: Extends Stoke stay

Nash joined the Potters from Everton on a two-year contract in 2010 after previously spending time at the club on loan from Wigan.

The 38-year-old, who is third-choice keeper at Stoke behind Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen, has chosen to extend his stay at the Premier League side after considering his options.

Manager Tony Pulis told the club's official website: "It is important for us to have three top goalkeepers in the squad at this level and we are as strong in that department as any Premier League club.

"At this stage of his career, it was only natural that Carlo wanted to explore the possibility of playing first-team football elsewhere when his contract expired at the end of last season, but we are delighted that he has now decided to stay here.

"He has done a fantastic job in the time he has been back with us and I have every confidence he will do a great job if he is called upon this season.

"The excellent competition which we have in the goalkeeping department can only be a good thing for all three of them in terms of pushing them to perform at the highest level, as we have seen from our keepers since Carlo rejoined us."

Former Manchester City keeper Nash made 10 appearances while on loan at the end of Stoke's promotion-winning 2007-08 campaign but has been restricted to one Carling Cup appearance since returning to the Britannia.

Bosnia international Begovic deposed former long-term No.1 Sorensen last season but is prepared for greater competition from the Denmark goalkeeper in the coming campaign.

He said: "I think I did pretty well last season and I ended the season as the No.1, so hopefully that remains to be the case.

"Obviously, Thomas will want to play just as much as I do, but we will have to wait and see what the manager decides.

"I am desperate to play games, and I will be doing everything I can in pre-season training and in the matches to make sure I get that starting spot."
