Matthews hopes for regular spot

Celtic defender Adam Matthews is looking to secure a regular first-team place in Neil Lennon's Clydesdale Bank Premier League-winning side ahead of the new season.

Matthews: Wants a regular spot in the team

The Wales international joined Celtic in 2011 from Cardiff and had been fighting with the likes of Cha Du-Ri and Mark Wilson for the right-back berth at Celtic Park, but with those two players now moving on the path is clearer for Matthews to lockdown a starting place.

The 20-year-old is currently in Germany with the Celtic squad as they prepare for the defence of their league crown and is targeting a settled year with the club.

"I feel like I established myself in the squad last year so hopefully I can do it again this season," he told celticfc.net

"Last year the boys made me feel welcome straight away so I didn't really feel like the new boy but I've been with them for a year now so I'm a bit more comfortable (this) year."

Matthews has travelled to the continent despite suffering from a small hamstring problem and is hoping to be fully involved as soon as possible.

He said: "Hopefully it won't keep me out too long. I started running today so hopefully I'll be back in full training at the end of the week or the start of next week.

"It's more about football fitness at this time of the year. Last week we did a lot of running but this week we're here and we can get some work done on the pitch.

"I think all the boys are fit but it's all about getting back to match fitness now. These games will help us get sharp, obviously we want to win them but its not the main thing just now."
