Midfielder Butterfield burst on to the national stage last season after being made Tykes captain by manager Keith Hill and was linked with a £2million move to either Newcastle or Reading before his campaign was cut short by a knee ligament injury sustained in December.
"Everyone was expecting Jacob to leave since Christmas," Hassell told the club's official website. "The injury might have put clubs off, I hope he signs for another year.
"I think he needs another season at Barnsley playing well week in, week out, under a manager that trusts him and believes in him - it will benefit his career, long-term."
Hassell is excited by the two latest arrivals to Oakwell and expects a couple more new faces before the start of the 2012/13 season.
He added: "Jacob Mellis is a great talent, he's playing under the right manager now. Obviously Mido coming in, it's an unbelievable signing and again he's coming to play under the right manager. The fans will be looking forward to it. We still need two or three, which the gaffer will know."
