The long-serving Bristolian will be forced to take a pay cut to stay with the Robins but money is not an problem for the defender, who wants to end his career with the club he supported as a boy.
Carey's future was in doubt until boss Derek McInnes named his retained list last month, but his performances towards the tail end of the season have merited the decision to continue the centre-back's career at Ashton Gate.
Carey told the Bristol Post: "I'm a Bristol boy and I love the club and the city. Financially, the deal is not what I'm used to, but I'm not worried about the money.
"In future, more of my money will be performance-related, but I just want to stay here in Bristol."
