Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar is keen to stay in English football following his release by Aston Villa.

Cuellar: Has waved farewell to Villa fans

Villa decided against offering him a new deal and the 30-year-old has headed back to his homeland to consider his options for next season.

But the ex-Rangers right-back, who has been heavily linked with a move to former boss Martin O'Neill's Sunderland, looks certain to return to the Premier League.

"I would like to stay in England," he said. "There are always a lot of rumours about other teams and other countries.

"I love the football, I love the people and I love the country. My best option is to stay in this country.

"If I got a good project at a club then that would be the important thing for me."
