Andrey Arshavin is set to wear the captain's armband at the European Championship this summer, according to Russia boss Dick Advocaat.

Arshavin: New lease of life since returning to Zenit

The Arsenal man has found some of the best form of his career since joining his former club Zenit St Petersburg on loan in February.

The midfielder joined the London club at the start of 2009 in a deal worth around £15m but has fallen down the pecking order over the past couple of seasons.

However, he has played a key part in Zenit being crowned league champions and his performances have caught the eye of Advocaat.

"Arshavin is going to be the captain," the Dutchman told the RIA Novosti news agency

Russia have been placed in Group A with co-hosts Poland, the Euro 1996 finalists Czech Republic and Greece, who were shock winners in 2004.

And Advocaat believes they are not the outsiders of the tournament that some think and is backing them as an outside bet to lift the trophy.

"When people talk about the Euro, they all talk about the Netherlands, Spain and Germany," he said.

"But if we can play the kind of football we are capable of then we could be dark horses."
