The 20-year-old has yet to make an appearance for Alan Pardew's side this season after the Magpies chief finally lost patience following his off-field troubles.
Newcastle were apparently willing to cut their losses with the striker in the summer but, with five years still to run on his present deal, Ranger insists he wants to fight for his place.
"You can look at everything, and it has negatives and positives," Ranger told the Sunderland Echo.
"For me, I have to look at the positive side of it. I hope I get my chance. My ultimate dream is still to play for Newcastle and score goals.
"I want to score goals for the first team, get on with all the players and make the fans sing my name. It's all anybody wants."
Yet, it could be some time before he is given a chance, with Newcastle flourishing at the moment.
Demba Ba and Leon Best are currently the first-choice pairing with the Ameobi brothers, Shola and Sammy, providing the back up.
But football has a funny way of changing, and Ranger wants to make sure he is prepared to take his chance when it is presented to him.
"Yes, it's frustrating, but you just have to get on with it, I guess," he added.
"All I can do is keep working hard, getting games and looking sharp."
