Picture Martin: Settled tax debt

SHRIMPERS PAY UP AND SETTLE DEBT

Southend United have confirmed that they have staved off the threat of going into administration by clearing a tax bill of £2.1million.

The Shrimpers were given a stay of execution by the High Court on Wednesday after pledging to repay, in full, the amount owed to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

And in a statement issued on Saturday afternoon, the club confirmed that the funds had been paid by one of chairman Ron Martin's Group Companies.

Martin turned down the offer of outside investment in the club by a local consortium last Monday, pledging to raise the capital himself.
