Wimbledon warmed up for their FA Cup fourth round replay with Middlesbrough on
Tuesday by claiming only their third home First Division win of the season.
Bottom club Wednesday did their best to help them by conceding two goals in
the first 10 minutes.
A quick reply by Paul Jewell's team kept the game interesting until midway
through the second half when a third Wimbledon goal sealed victory.
Dons fans, who saw record signing John Hartson depart for Coventry earlier
this week, will not be heartbroken as they watched exciting young discovery
Patrick Agyemang improve with every game.
Agyemang is a tall, rangy striker who has come through the youth ranks and his
partnership with Jason Euell holds great promise if Wimbledon can hold on to top
scorer Euell.
Dons manager Terry Burton claims the youngster just needs his first senior
goal to send his confidence soaring.
And Wednesday veteran Des Walker will not face many trickier opponents this
season.
The Sheffield club will have to do far better than this if they are to avoid
the drop.
Apart from a busy spell in the first half and a late strike by Owen Morrison
against the post, they offered little encouragement to their large travelling
band of supporters.
Wimbledon were in front after four minutes as a corner from Alan Kimble picked
out the unmarked Trond Andersen to score with a firm header.
Five minutes later Wednesday were in real trouble when Agyemang chased and won
a lost cause before cutting in and setting up Euell for the second goal.
Wednesday gave themselves hope by pulling back one goal and, ironically, the
scorer was Efan Ekoku, who spent five seasons with the Dons and was twice their
leading scorer. He steered in a corner from Alan Quinn.
The Dons took control from the start of the second half and it was something
of a surprise that it took them 25 further minutes to wrap up the points.
A cross from Ainsworth was punched straight into his own net by goalkeeper
Marlon Beresford and, 12 minutes later, Andersen scored his second and
Wimbledon's fourth when he chipped a shot over the advancing Beresford.
