SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY REPORTS 2000-2001

Blackburn 2 Sheff Wed 0

Blackburn continued their march towards the Premiership against a poor Sheffield Wednesday at Ewood Park.

Rovers were in the driving seat from the moment former Sheffield United striker Marcus Bent gave them the lead on the half-hour.

Ten minutes later giant defender Martin Taylor lashed home the second and there was no way back for struggling Wednesday.

The visitors should have been ahead in the 20th minute but Alan Quinn shot wide from six yards with the goal at his mercy.

Blackburn went to the other end where they caused problems galore before finally finding a way through on the half-hour.

A three-man move down the left ended with a cross from Matt Jansen and Bent was in the right place at the right time on the far post to score his third league goal for Blackburn.

Wednesday escaped when an attempted clearance from former England defender Des Walker bounced back off the foot of the post and Blackburn had at least two penalty claims waved away.

The game was virtually over as a contest in the 40th minute when defender Taylor slammed home a left-foot shot from 12 yards after Wednesday failed to clear a corner.

The visitors came more into it in the second half but it was still Blackburn who looked the more likely scorers.

Damien Duff raced 60 yards but lost his nerve at the decisive moment, allowing Wednesday's on-loan goal keeper Marlon Beresford to make a brave save.

The goalkeeper did well on two other occasions when the dangerous Bent broke through, twice diving away to his right to deny the striker further goals.

Allan Mahon was not too far off the mark late on as Blackburn pieced together a six-man move.

The Wednesday defence was all over the place at times as Blackburn attempted to boost their goal tally.
