SHEFFIELD UNITED REPORTS 2000-2001
Picture Shipperley (right) - bagged the winner for Barnsley (Allsport)

Sheffield Utd 1 Barnsley 2

Neil Shipperley's superb second-half strike gave Barnsley victory in a scrappy derby.

Barnsley took the lead through Martin Bullock with United drawing level with a goal from Carl Asaba on the stroke of half-time, but the visitors went away with all three points following Shipperley's winner.

After a quiet opening, Paul Devlin tested Barnsley keeper Kevin Miller with a volley.

Miller then had to race out of his area to clear as Asaba threatened.

Barnsley's first attack of note saw Alex Neil put a header off target from Darren Barnard's cross. Bullock then put a long-range effort wide.

Barnsley skipper Steve Chettle produced a well timed challenge to dispossess the dangerous Asaba on the edge of the area.

Indecision in the United defence gifted Bullock the opening goal on 32 minutes. Two opportunities to clear were not taken and the loose ball fell to Bullock who fired into the unguarded net.

Laurence D'Jaffo put a long-range effort wide as the Blades tried to hit back.

The equaliser came just before half-time. Bobby Ford hooked the ball upfield, Asaba was through one on one with Miller and the striker held his nerve to fire home.

United made a bright start to the second half.

Asaba broke into the left-hand side of the area and put the ball across the face of goal, but there was no-one there to apply the finish.

Barnsley's response came from Bullock who saw his free-kick saved.

Asaba laid the ball off to Ndlovu just outside the area and the winger shot narrowly wide.

Then came Shipperley's winner.

The striker received the ball from Neil about 20 yards out and hammered the ball past Simon Tracey into the left-hand corner.

Barnsley went in search of a third with Dyer attempting to chip Tracey, but the keeper stretched to save.
