Portsmouth 2 Wimbledon 1

Nigel Quashie scored his fourth goal of the season from 25 yards to give Portsmouth their first win in seven League and Cup outings.

Quashie's belter came on 27 minutes and followed a slick short corner routine with former Wimbledon defender Ceri Hughes, who returned to the Pompey line up after a groin operation.

Lee Bradbury had given Steve Claridge's side the lead on 14 minutes with a penalty after Quashie had been body checked by Dons defender Peter Hawkins in the Wimbledon penalty area.

But five minutes later Wimbledon striker Jason Euell equalised for the visitors from six yards following a mistake by Portsmouth captain Darren Moore.

Moore failed to deal with a cross from the right flank and the ball squirmed to Euell who sidefooted past Aaron Flahavan from six yards to notch his 14th goal of the campaign.

Portsmouth should have taken the lead as early as the 10th minute but Wimbledon defender Kelvin Davis made three super saves from Pompey trio Luke Nightingale, Quashie and Bradbury.

Stefani Miglioranzi's overhead kick attempt was miss timed and the ball found its way to Nightingale whose 20 yard shot was parried by Davis. Quashie and Bradbury failed to score from the two subsequent follow up attempts.

Portsmouth player-manager Steve Claridge introduced himself as a 54th minute substitute for the ineffective Nightingale.

Claridge started with Nightingale and Bradbury in attack after bruising his foot a week earlier but he failed to extend his side's lead on 58 minutes.

Former Derby man Kevin Harper delivered a right-wing centre but Claridge could only take the ball over Davis' crossbar.

Marcus Gayle was introduced as a substitute on 64 minutes when Par Karlsson was withdrawn.

But he failed to score five minutes later with a free shot that was deflected wide off Flahavan's left-hand post.

Gayle set Euell up with a headed knock down seven minutes from time but Flahavan intervened.
