Sheffield Wednesday boss Chris Turner admitted his side need maximum points
from their last three games to avoid relegation.
Wednesday, who drew 0-0 at home to Grimsby, are five points away from safety.
Shefki Kuqi, Leigh Bromby, Brian Barry-Murphy and Alan Quinn were all unable
to take half chances to leave the Owls with just a point.
"It is disappointing in that we desperately needed the points," said
Turner.
"It looked like it was only going to take one goal to win the game, Grimsby
were happy to defend their 18-yard box and we didn't have enough to unlock
them.
"There were signs of anxiety when we needed a cool head to play the ball out
wide or composure in the box to take the shot on goal. But I can't knock the
players for their efforts - they were all very committed."
The Owls travel to relegation rivals Brighton on Easter Monday and Turner
insists it will be a vital match.
"The game at Brighton was always going to be a crucial one with both teams
needing a win. I hope we get a lucky streak in front of goal and go on to win,"
he said.
"The players have given me everything and we have only lost six of our 19
games since Boxing Day. Unfortunately for us we still need to win our last three
to have any chance of avoiding relegation.
"But whatever happens we have shown everyone that the people in charge will
turn this club in the right direction.
"If you put our results from the second half of the season into the first
half, then we wouldn't be in this situation. That's no disrespect to anyone -
it's a fact."
Grimsby player-boss Paul Groves felt his side could have nicked the win.
The Mariners' best chance was a fierce 30-yard effort form Chris Bolder which
forced a fingertip save from keeper Kevin Pressman.
"The players gave everything they've got and over the 90 minutes their keeper
worked more than ours did," said Groves.
"If certain decisions had gone our way the result might have been very
different."
The Mariners remain at the bottom of the table and are six points adrift of
safety.
Groves admitted it is looking a difficult task for them to stave off the drop
to Division Two.
"The games are running out for us to close the gap between ourselves and the
safety mark. But when it is still mathematically possible we will always keep
going. If we win on Monday and Stoke lose there is still a chance.
"The financial situation at the club has not allowed me to strengthen the
squad. The club have worked hard to avoid administration and keep going.
"If we go down it's going to make it very difficult for everyone at the club
who is trying very hard to keep it on an even keel."
