Crewe manager Dario Gradi refuses to rule out the possibility of departing skipper Kenny Lunt returning to Gresty Road in the future.
The 26-year-old has signed a three-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday, ending a spell of almost a decade with the Cheshire club, although he will still be involved with the relegated Alex's youth set-up.
Gradi said: "It's personally disappointing because we're used to having him here and he's someone who I have great faith and confidence in but he did feel like it was now or never.
"It's a possibility and you certainly would never rule out him coming back here, and he will continue his work at weekends so he'll still be around."
Meanwhile, experienced midfielder Tony Grant, who broke into the side in the second half of last season after his debut was pushed back by red tape and then a broken ankle, has signed a one-year deal with the club.
Gradi is pleased to have the 31-year-old on-board and added: "The one thing about Tony was his enthusiasm for signing and he really wants to be here."
