Crewe manager Dario Gradi is confident goalkeeper Ben Williams will sign a new two-year deal at Gresty Road.
The former Manchester United trainee, 23, has endured a torturous last five months after a meningitis scare last December.
And Gradi is now challenging the fit-again Williams to hold down a regular place in the Alex side as they contemplate League One football.
"I think Ben will sign for us," said Gradi. "He has indicated he is willing to accept out offer and I've told him that he will start the season as our number one goalkeeper.
"He has overcome a serious illness and everyone has been delighted with the progress he has made."
Gradi has also hinted he is keen to bring in a more experienced goalkeeper to act as understudy to Williams to help develop his talent.
