Swansea deservedly registered their first victory of this season's Championship campaign by ending Coventry's unbeaten record in a low-key encounter.

Ashley Williams pounced to grab the only goal in the 69th minute after Nathan Dyer's acrobatic effort had rebounded off the crossbar as the hosts failed to clear their lines.

Summer signing Sammy Clingan was the pantomime villain for the Sky Blues having put a first-half penalty wide following Andrea Orlandi's handball.

And the miss proved costly in a disappointing clash that provided plenty of endeavour but lacked any real quality in the final third, with a single goal always likely to settle matters.

Chris Coleman named the same Coventry side that took a point at Doncaster on Tuesday, with new loan signing Jack Cork named among the substitutes.

Striker Chad Bond, 22, was handed his league debut for Swansea in a starting XI that showed one change from the midweek draw against Reading, Kerry Morgan the man to make way. New arrival Besian Idrizaj did not receive international clearance in time to feature.

It was the visitors who settled the better of the two sides at a sunny Ricoh Arena, with Sky Blues defender Martin Cranie charging down a goalbound effort from Stephen Dobbie after six minutes.

Leon Best fired a weak effort into the side netting at the other end but it was Clingan who was the guilty party after 14 minutes.

Orlandi was unlucky to see Aron Gunnarsson's long throw bounce up and off his hand but, after much deliberation between Clingan, Best and Clinton Morrison, it was the former who stepped up to fire his spot-kick wide.

Best headed straight at Swans keeper Dorus De Vries shortly after, before Keiren Westwood did well to control Orlandi's effort from a well worked free-kick at the other end.

The second half started in much the same fashion as the first with Swansea making the early running and Coventry doing their best to remain resolute.

Mark Gower drilled an effort narrowly wide of a post just prior to the hour mark before both sides introduced fresh legs in an attempt to add a new impetus.

Coventry found their feet as the second half progressed and the pace of the encounter picked up, but a lack of conviction was proving key.

Yet the Swans did finally break the deadlock midway through the second half.

Sky Blues defender Ben Turner failed to clear Gower's cross into the box and the ball fell for Dyer, whose bicycle kick rebounded off the crossbar and to Williams to fire home.

Swansea were content to run the clock down in the remaining 20 minutes and record their first ever victory at the Ricoh and only their second ever win at Coventry - with the first coming back in 1949.
