A superb late strike from substitute Claus Jorgensen salvaged a vital point
for relegation-threatened Coventry after a hard-fought Coca-Cola Championship
battle with Millwall.
The Danish midfielder finished off his own determined run with just one minute
remaining to boost his side's survival hopes and severely dent the Lions' fading
play-off bid.
Dennis Wise's side had taken the lead through Jody Morris' second-half penalty
but were unable to kill off a spirited City outfit.
The visitors had enough chances to win the game outright but finished the game
still looking for their first win at Millwall since 1955.
Wise opted for just two changes to the side that went down 2-0 at leaders
Wigan on Saturday. Curtis Weston and David Livermore came back in, with Marvin
Elliott and Danny Dichio missing out.
Opposite number Micky Adams made five alterations to the team which drew with
Cardiff.
Belying their lowly league position, the Sky Blues made a confident start and
Dele Adebola was inches away from converting a Gary McSheffrey cross in the
first minute.
The Lions responded well and Mark Quigley flashed a header just wide at the
other end during a lively opening period.
But the pace of the game soon dropped with the hosts seemingly happy to sit
back and let their opponents attack them. Coventry were more than willing to
oblige but severely lacked a cutting edge in the final third.
Adebola continued to cause problems as the half progressed but Adams' side
failed to turn their territorial advantage into chances.
The hosts finally stirred themselves into life and were unlucky not to go in
front when Barry Hayles headed Tony Craig's cross against the post after 26
minutes.
Coventry skipper Stephen Hughes then drew a fine save from Andy Marshall as
the game swung from end to end, before Stern John's stinging volley also tested
the Lions keeper.
Andy Morrell drove wide when presented with the best chance of the half for
Coventry but it finished goalless at the interval.
The home side must have taken an ear-bashing at half time but the expected
onslaught failed to materialise in the early stages of the second period.
Robert Page, making his debut for the away side, came close to heading into
his own goal as the pressure finally began to grow, but Coventry rarely looked
troubled at the back.
A run of just one win from eight league games had seen Millwall's play-off
hopes severely dented ahead of the game, but any supporters who expected an easy
three points against the west Midlands outfit were left frustrated.
However, just as it seemed the second half would pass by without any incident
to report, Coventry substitute Trevor Benjamin needlessly handled in the area to
give Morris the chance to open the scoring.
The former Chelsea midfielder stepped up and coolly beat on-loan goalkeeper
Ian Bennett from the penalty spot after 69 minutes.
There were half-chances for both sides in the closing stages but it was
Coventry who snatched the vital second goal when Jorgensen slid home the
equaliser in the 89th minute.
