Coventry fell victim to a 4-0 Highfield Road thrashing at the hands of First Division champions-elect Portsmouth.

Paul Merson's second-half effort proved the icing on the cake as Division One leaders Portsmouth marched to their 38th victory of the season.

An early own goal from Gary Caldwell set the tone for Coventry's evening before strikes from Steve Stone, Kevin Harper and Merson completed City's night of woe.

The hosts had called Shaka Hislop into action in the 13th minute when Youssef Safri's teasing cross from the right channel was met on the volley by Dean Holdsworth, the shot parried in front of his face by the Portsmouth goalkeeper.

But seconds later the hosts found themselves behind after conceding a classic counter-attack, Portsmouth registering the opener with their first attack of the game.

Svetoslav Todorov burst through on goal and slotted under advancing goalkeeper Morten Hyldgaard, only to see the shot rebound from the post.

But the unfortunate Caldwell found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time as a bobbling ball ricocheted off his shin and into the net.

And five minutes later Coventry found themselves further behind as a sweeping move saw Yacubu Ayegbini advance along the left flank and centre for Gary O'Neill, possession being passed out to the right where Steve Stone unleashed an unstoppable shot.

Portsmouth's third arrived in the 23rd minute following another Ayegbini raid along the wing, this time Harper meeting the cross with a spectacular falling volley.

But Harper came close to inadvertently handing the hosts a lifeline six minutes before the break when a driven effort from Safri skidded off the lunging Scotsman's boot, though Hislop performed heroics at the near post to palm away the deflection.

With goal-scoring chances hard to come by after the restart, Julian Joachim might have done better in the 63rd minute when a right-wing cross from Calum Davidson found the striker unmarked on the penalty spot, only for the header to lack any sort of menace.

Moments later Joachim looked set to score from a short corner routine which also featured Craig Pead and Coventry player-manager Gary McAllister though Hislop was down quickly at the near post to ensure his clean sheet remained intact.

And just as in the first half, Portsmouth made Coventry pay for their profligacy with play rapidly swinging to the City goalmouth, Todorov laying back for Ayegbini to prompt Merson who rippled the net from 18 yards in the 68th minute.

Defeat means free-falling Coventry remain in search of their first home league win since Boxing Day.
