Wolves may have scored the only goal of the game to beat Brighton, but Wanderers are a club wracked by bitterness following their failure to reach the Championship play-offs.
Recriminations have begun in the Black Country where chief executive Jez Moxey has labelled the season "a complete disaster" and manager Glenn Hoddle responded by accusing Moxey of spreading disunity.
Meanwhile, Kenny Miller's first-half penalty notwithstanding, Wolves supporters booed off their team after spending much of the final home game of the season chanting "disaster", "Hoddle out" and "sack the board."
It was the hosts who had been first on the offensive but Tomasz Frankowski was beaten to a loose ball in the six-yard box by Brighton goalkeeper Wayne Henderson.
Jeremie Aliadiere was next to threaten for the hosts as he burst clear and to the byline with his cut-back only an inch away from finding Miller.
In the 27th minute Brighton's Colin Kazim-Richards dispossessed right-back Rob Edwards and fed Gifton Noel-Williams to unleash a swerving and dipping effort which was marginally wide.
At the other end, Aliadiere met Colin Cameron's left-wing corner with a glancing header which flew wide.
But the hosts took the lead in the 31st minute after referee Neil Swarbrick adjudged Paul McShane to have handled a Mark Kennedy corner.
Miller made no mistake from the spot to register his 12th goal of the season.
Frankowski could only fire high and wide three minutes later and Kennedy found the side-netting from Miller's cross.
Noel-Williams fired over again five minutes before the break before the hosts survived a goalmouth scramble as Keith Lowe cleared an Alex Frutos shot off the line.
Hoddle introduced Jackie McNamara as replacement for Keith Lowe as the Scotsman made his first appearance since sustaining cruciate knee ligament damage on the training ground in September.
Michael Oakes replaced Stefan Postma in the Wolves goal too but was untroubled by a long-range shot from Nicolas which was dragged wide of goal shortly after the restart.
Oakes was tested in the 65th minute though as Kazim-Richards burst through the right channel and forced a diving parry.
Two minutes later and Aliadiere's 18-yard screamer deserved better than to ricochet off the post and back into open play.
Next it was Cameron's turn to hit the woodwork, this time from an 85th-minute free-kick, and Aliadiere hooked the rebound wide.
Late on a Joleon Lescott header was cleared off the line by Sebastien Carole before Carl Cort was denied when inches out by a combination of Henderson and Adam Hinshelwood.
