Picture Hoddle - takes the fans' reaction on the chin.

HODDLE ROUNDS ON FRUSTRATED FANS

By Andy Tilley, PA Sport

Wolves manager Glenn Hoddle is determined to make the Molineux boo boys eat their words.

With Wanderers' hopes of promotion to the Premiership in ruins after they failed to make the play-offs, fans vented their frustration despite Brighton being beaten 1-0 in the Black Country club's final home fixture of their Championship campaign.

Kenny Miller scored the only goal of the game after converting a 31st-minute penalty awarded when Paul McShane was adjudged to have handled Mark Kennedy's corner.

But Wolves were nevertheless booed off at half-time and full-time while chants of "sack the board" and "we want Hoddle out" also rang around the stadium.

But Hoddle said: "As manager you take sole responsibility for results and you have to take fans' reaction on the chin.

"I understand the supporters want the club to do well and that they're not happy but I'm made of stern stuff and hearing things like that just makes me more determined.

"The only way to turn around a crowd like that is with better results and hearing the reaction we've had just makes me more determined to get those results.

"But what I don't like is that it's seeping through to the players.

"Some of the chants and some of the reaction to certain players doesn't help us.

"It affects you as a player, it affects your performances, so I've spoken about it to the players concerned.

"I know the supporters are frustrated, but we all are.

"And to be honest, I think the reaction would have been the same had we got to the play-off semi-finals and lost, or even reached the final and lost.

"That's the frustration at not being in the Premiership."

Hoddle also defended the signing of Polish international Tomasz Frankowski who cost £1.4million from Spanish side Elche but has yet to find the back of the net in 16 appearances.

He said: "Tomasz has been here three-and-a-half months and it hasn't worked out as we would have liked, that's for sure.

"He's been big enough to come out and admit going so long without a goal has affected him mentally.

"But this boy is a goal machine and to be honest he's a better player than I thought he was when we signed him."

Brighton counterpart Mark McGhee had no complains about referee Neil Swarbrick's penalty award.

The Seagulls boss said: "Paul said he'd got a nudge as the corner came over.

"It wasn't a foul but it was enough for him to lose his balance and lurch forward which meant his arm went up as he tried to right himself.

"But I thought we still did enough to win the game because we played better than Wolves, we just didn't take any of the chances we made."
