BODOR STRIKE STUNS SPARTA Boldiszar Bodor's superb second-half free-kick earned Roda JC a shock first win in six games, 2-1 against in-form Sparta and lifted them out of the Eredivisie relegation zone. Rydell Poepon's penalty had cancelled out Mads Junker's opener, but Roda regained the lead with 20 minutes to go - and held on. Sparta's Nathan Rutjes drilled a right-footed effort against the post inside two minutes, but Roda responded as Davy de Fauw curled a free-kick wide. Kevin Strootman's free-kick for the hosts was headed inches wide by Eric Falken-burg, before Roda took the upper hand. After teeing up Jeanvion Matondo to mishit a good chance wide, Davy de Jong was again the provider as Junker slotted home from close range in the 33rd minute. But Sparta levelled from the spot within six minutes after Falkenburg was fouled by Vincent Lachambre - Poepon converting calmly. Falkenburg shot wide, and Junker headed over in an end-to-end start to the second period - which continued when the former shot straight at goalkeeper Bram Castro after a good cross from Edouard Duplan. Anouar Hadouir drew a good save from Sparta goalkeeper Cor Varkevisser, before Bodor curled the visitors into a lead which would prove decisive. Sparta had one late chance to level when a partially cleared corner fell to Romano Denneboom, but the striker fired wide. That brought an end to the hosts' three-match winning run in the Eredivisie, but they remain ninth in the table. |
