Dynamo Kiev moved into a strong
position in Group B after brushing aside 10-man Roma in freezing conditions in
the Ukraine on Tuesday night.
Two late goals were enough to see Dynamo jump two points clear of Bayer
Leverkusen and Real Madrid, who drew 1-1 in Spain in Tuesday's other group
match.
But for Roma, the defeat means their European nightmare has finally came to an
end as they failed to get the win that would have kept alive their hopes of
earning a UEFA Cup spot.
The Italian giants had already been eliminated from the Champions League after
losing three of their opening four matches and needed a three-point haul from
their trip to Kiev just to have a chance of finishing third in the group.
But a calamitous campaign in which they have so far gained just one point,
scored four goals and incurred the wrath of UEFA for a crowd incident that saw
Dynamo awarded the first meeting between these two 3-0, came to an end on a
wretched evening.
Dynamo dominated much of the match but needed a comical own goal from Roma
defender Traianos Dellas 17 minutes from time to get the breakthrough their play
deserved.
In attempting to clear a low cross from Tiberiu Ghioane, the Greek
international succeeded only in sending a diving header past his own goalkeeper
Ivan Pelizzoli and into the back of the net.
Roma, without the likes of captain Francesco Totti and top-scorer Vincenzo
Montella, had barely threatened as an attacking force during the game and their
hopes of getting back into the contest were badly hit when Giuseppe Scurto was
sent off.
The defender was handed a second yellow card for hauling down Kleber, leaving
Roma to face the final 14 minutes with just 10 men.
And with the man advantage, Dynamo were quick to double their lead and kill
the game off.
Diogo Rincon cleverly made space for himself on the right of the box before
firing a low cross to the far post where substitute Maksim Shatskikh was on hand
to slot the ball home for his 100th goal for Dynamo.
While that completed a miserable night for Roma, whose final match at home to
Real Madrid will be played behind closed doors as part of the UEFA punishment
for referee Anders Frisk being hit by an object thrown from the stands on match
day one, it pushed Dynamo to within touching distance of the next phase.
They now only need a draw from their final game at Leverkusen to guarantee
qualification.
Unsurprisingly, Dynamo adapted to the arctic-like conditions at their Valery
Lobanovskiy stadium much better than Roma and the hosts had a virtual monopoly
on the goalscoring chances.
However, it was beginning to look as if it wasn't going to be their day when a
mixture of poor finishing and brilliant goalkeeping from Pelizzoli kept the
teams deadlocked.
That was never more evident than just after the hour-mark when Pelizzoli
produced two amazing saves in a matter of seconds.
The first saw the Roma custodian somehow deflect the ball over the bar from a
point-blank effort from Maris Verpakovskis.
But Pelizzoli managed to trump even that save from the following corner when
he stuck out his left hand to tip over Andriy Husin's piledriver from six yards
out.
Even Pelizzoli's heroics couldn't save Roma in the end, however, as the
Italians slipped out of Europe after a campaign they will quickly want to
forget.
