Liechtenstein 3 Iceland 0

Group F basement boys Liechtenstein produced a stunning performance in Vaduz as they comprehensively beat Iceland in the Euro 2008 qualifier.

It was their second win of the campaign and only their third in European Championship history, but the margin of victory did not flatter them.

Mario Frick opened the scoring in the first half, before two goals from Thomas Beck late in the second completed a magnificent night for the hosts.

The minnows were quickest off the mark and Burgmeier tested Arni Gautur Arason early on with a shot which bounced awkwardly.

The Iceland goalkeeper made the stop, but needed Ragnar Sigurdsson to complete the clearance.

With 25 minutes on the clock, Iceland finally had a shot on goal, but Ivar Ingimarsson's volley went over the bar.

Two minutes later, Liechtenstein took the lead.

Franz Burgmeier was the creator - his cross from the left was met by Frick, whose low finish beat Arason and nestled in the back of the net.

Iceland's only response was a speculative long-distance effort from Ingimarsson which was held by Peter Jehle.

At the other end, Benjamin Fischer fired over from the edge of the box and the hosts took a deserved lead into the break.

The match livened up somewhat after the interval, but it was still all Liechtenstein.

Frick, Burgmeier and Andreas Gerster all took shots, without troubling Arason, before Burgmeier fired a free-kick over the bar.

Iceland had a golden chance to equalise just after the hour.

Sigurdsson's cross was met by Emil Hallfredsson just six yards from goal, but his header was saved by Jehle.

As Iceland upped their game, Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson latched onto Kristjan Orn Sigurdsson's free-kick with a right effort but again the Liechtenstein stopper held on.

Things turned decisively in the home side's favour in the 80th minute with a classic route one goal.

A long ball from Jehle was collected by Beck, who beat beat Arason from 12 yards.

And three minutes later it was 3-0, as Beck met a Burgmeier corner at the near post and converted with his left foot.
