Lazio saw their UEFA Cup campaign brought to an end on Thursday as they failed to take three points against a stubborn Egaleo side.

Having fallen behind to Ioannis Chloros' early effort, the Italians looked to be heading for the win they needed when Roberto Muzzi's double gave them a first-half lead.

However, the Greek hosts came back after the interval through Anastasios Agritis to earn Egaleo their first point in Group E as Lazio saw their European hopes come crashing to the ground.

With progression to the next round all but a pipe dream, Egaleo were playing mostly for pride but certainly gave their fans something to cheer about after just eight minutes when a Thomas Makris ball found its way through to Chloros, who slotted home to open the scoring.

However, the lead was short-lived as four minutes later Lazio were level when Muzzi's free-kick left Egaleo goalkeeper Srdan Kljajevic a mere spectator.

Knowing only a win would keep their European campaign alive, the Italians stepped up the pressure on their opponents and were rewarded for their efforts in the 36th minute as a clever ball from Paolo Di Canio was struck home again by Muzzi.

Lazio continued to attack after the interval and Di Canio came close to adding a third with a stunning volley which was well-saved by Kljajevic.

And three minutes later, the visitors were made to rue the missed chance when Makris set up Agritis to lob Lazio keeper Angelo Peruzzi and bring Egaleo back into the match.

Di Canio tried to swing things back in Lazio's favour with a header which edged past the post, while Egaleo also sought a winning goal as Konstantinos Papoutsis struck an effort just over the bar.

And the hosts almost grabbed a late decider when Makris tried to lob Peruzzi, but the Lazio goalkeeper held onto the shot to salvage a draw although it was not enough as the Italians' campaign came to a premature end.
