Orlando duo Dennis Chin and Kevin Molino combined to force Thomas Sorensen into his first save before Glenn Whelan tested Miguel Gallardo with a free-kick.

But the Republic of Ireland striker crashed a volley past Gallardo from a Peter Crouch knock-down shortly before the break.

Stoke had Whelan dismissed after two quick bookings for a foul on Rodrigo Lopez and a scuffle with former Potters player James O'Connor.

Tony Pulis was handed two further blows when striker Cameron Jerome and defender Marc Wilson were forced out of the action in the latter stages with injuries.

Sorensen denied both Charlie Campbell and George Davis to secure a narrow win for the visitors.
