Lyon coach Remi Garde has called for a new approach in scheduling league fixtures following Europa League matches.

Les Gones take on Monaco on Sunday, three days after their 1-0 win over Rijeka in Europe, and Garde would prefer to see such games scheduled for Monday evenings instead to combat fatigue.

"This time, we have the immense fortune to play at 5pm and not at 2pm," he sarcastically told L'Equipe. "It gives us three hours longer to recover.

"League games (should be played on) Monday for the teams who have played on Thursday in the Europa League.

"That way, everyone would be on a more equal footing and there would be no suggestion of French clubs not taking this competition seriously.

"To pretect French football, I think it would be an intelligent decision."

An injury to Mouhamadou Dabo against the Croatian side should not prevent him taking his place, while Gael Danic and Henri Bedimo could also return from injury against the Monegasques.

Long-term absentee Miguel Lopes could also be in contention, but the game looks to have come too soon for Samuel Umtiti and Yoann Gourcuff.

Lyon fell into the Thursday night competition after losing to Real Sociedad in the Champions League play-off round, but Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri still views Sunday's opponents as a team who belong at the top level of European football.

"It will be a big match, a good test for us," the Italian told Monaco's official website.

"We will encounter on Sunday a Champions League team. OL are a quality team with quality players."

Monaco go into the game on the back of a disappointing draw with Sochaux, in which they led 2-0 after 10 minutes, and Ranieri warned: "I have spoken to my players this week and I expect a reaction. We have worked hard this week."

Layvin Kurzawa is available again after a two-week absence while Eric Abidal and Emmanuel Riviere could also be in contention.

Ranieri said: "I hope everyone will be available.

"Certain players such as Layvin Kurzawa, Manu Riviere and Eric Abidal have followed different training programmes this week. I will assess them on Saturday."
