Nurnberg are bidding to end their historic winless streak when they entertain Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The Bavarians became the first club in the history of the Bundesliga to go an entire first half of the season without winning a single match.

Even Tasmania Berlin, who hold the worst ever record for a Bundesliga side for a single season with 28 defeats in the 1965-66 campaign, losing over 80,000 fans over the course of the season, at least managed to win their first game in the top flight.

But with 11 draws from their opening 17 games, it is evident Nurnberg are not far away from securing that elusive first win, and coach Gertjan Verbeek is confident it will come this weekend.

"I've never been pessimistic," he said. "If we play our game, then we can beat anybody."

Victory would be a particular relief to the Dutch coach.

Since taking charge of the side, he has vowed not to shave again until they win a game, and he said the wins chalked up at a recent training camp do not count.

Those results did at least fuel the coach's optimism that he can reach for the razor on Saturday evening.

"I'm keen to see if we can confirm the performances we've shown in friendly matches," he said.

"I'm glad the season's getting under way again. I'm very curious."

Hoffenheim did not have too many problems winning games in the first half of the season, and scoring goals was not an issue either.

Conceding, on the other hand, came a little too easily for a side who scored fewer goals than only Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but let in more than anybody else, together with Hamburg.

"We've got more players now than we did at the start of the season, which us why we will concede fewer in the second half of the season," said coach Markus Gisdol.

He must decide who, between Jens Grahl and Koen Casteels, will start in goal after Tim Wiese left the club by mutual consent.

"Both have performed well in training and I'd say it's more of a comfortable situation to be in than a difficult one," said the coach.
