St Etienne defender Faouzi Ghoulam is targeting a win against Bastia as Les Verts look to prevent a third straight defeat in Ligue 1.

Christophe Galtier's side started the season well, but back-to-back 2-1 losses against Toulouse and Marseille have seen them slip to sixth place in the standings.

Algeria international Ghoulam, who scored his first goal for the club he has represented since 2010 in the midweek defeat at the Stade Velodrome, is aware that the run needs to be brought to an end if they are to maintain their positive start to the campaign.

"We have suffered two consecutive defeats," he told club website www.asse.fr.

"We must now win the match against Bastia to reverse the trend. We need to win to move up the standings and we are playing at home, so it is up to us to get the three points."

Bastia have lost three out of their four league games away from home so far this season and travel to St Etienne on the back of a 3-0 midweek defeat against Monaco.

Coach Frederic Hantz is expecting much more from his players over the course of the season as his summer recruits gel with the rest of the squad.

"Some players came very late," he said.

"Tactically and physically for some, they are not yet developed. We're on the right track. I am convinced that after the next international break, we will be better. Then we can manage our games differently."

Bastia midfielder Julien Sable will be returning to his former club and, despite being aware of the hosts' need for a victory, the 33-year-old knows the visitors also have something to prove.

"I know that Les Verts will be under pressure. They will be keen to win," he said.

"But our whole squad is united with confidence and we have things of our own that we need to show."
